Schwinn 18” Koen (Red) - The Good, Bad, & Not So Ugly

Schwinn 18” Koen (Red) - The Good, Bad, & Not So Ugly
The bike arrived fast, as in next day with Prime Member shipping. Box was open upon delivery, but in otherwise excellent condition. All parts were inside and very well protected with cardboard, foam, tape, etc.. No scratches or other damage noticed. It was mostly assembled, except for a few items such as; front wheel, handle bars, seat, and foot pegs. Everything fit together well. The instruction book was easy to follow, as needed. However, I’m very surprised that a boy’s bike is equipped with plastic hand brake handlebar mounts and adjusters that strip out, like ours did during adjustment of the rear brake lever. Luckily, it did not break and I was able to turn the loose screw all the way in and fine adjust the rear metal lever screw and cable connection to compensate. The brake still works fine, for now. A star should probably be subtracted for cheap materials though, since they do not belong on a boy’s bike in this area. I’m interested to see how the slick plastic looking seat cover and plastic chain guard hold up in the sun and temperatures. Still overall, the Schwinn’s general design features and paint scheme, plus most other fit and finish attributes, appear good. One star deduction for warped front tire rim. Another star deduction for warped rear tire rim. Bad rims equal bad shoe rim braking, premature tire & brake pad wear, and more importantly – are dangerous! Schwinn started in 1895 (since then various ownership changes and bankruptcy filings), but this is the year 2023, and rims are still being poorly manufactured and sold as is, with the company’s name on them? The current manufacturer should know, unacceptable corporate mismanagement (QC’s never autonomous), with shortsighted cheap material engineering, and embarrassing end of line quality issues, all clearly need resolved here, or these harmful reviews and negative word of mouth transmissions will continue, as competitors roll by earning profits selling lower priced and better made bicycles.Anyway, due largely to my disappointment, frustration, and desire for a quick resolution (solution below), I did not reach out to the most recent company representatives with a hope & prayer for possible corrective actions and/or typical communication games & hassles, as others have, concerning the cheap plastics issue, or for the warped rims the maker failed to notice initially, and sold me. Too much of my product research time, in store competitor comparisons, money, and now this review have been spent on this Schwinn badged item.My advice, since the bike has potential, purchase this model in a store, or at a low price online, until the quality issues diminish, if you care to take the risk. The charge for the local tire shop to professionally true both our precious boy’s new Schwinn 18” bike wheels before he could safely ride it was $50. Coupling that extra cost with the bike’s purchase price, we could have taken our chances with the same size, similar style and quality, Kent or Huffy from a local box retailer (with free assembly), for about half the price.

This 18" bike was purchased for a 4.5 year old (46" tall) who is riding without training wheels. Despite reservations that this bike would be too big, it is the perfect size with the seat down all the way and there is plenty of room to grow.

Assembly took about 20 minutes and the only tools that were needed was an Alan wrench, socket set and Phillip screwdriver. Most of this time was actually spent unpacking the bike which was wrapped heavily in cardboard and other protective material. Actual assembly time was closer to 10 minutes. The only fine tuning required was the front break and everything else went together smoothly. I liked how the handlebars are adjustable so I was able to angle them inward for the shorter arm reach.

I did remove the plastic number plate off the handlebars because I didn't like the look. Otherwise this is a sharp looking and sturdy kids bike that should be good for two to three years of use. I also liked that it came with a kick stand which most other bikes tend to come without these days.

This is a shout out to Amazon Warehouse Deals for a Used - Very Good item that only had a banged up box and otherwise appeared brand new for $60 less than a new bike. Most sizes and colors had numerous items on Amazon Warehouse Deals so there is a good chance you'll be able to save some money on this bike. Funny thing is this item actually came with two sets of pedals, when most items tend to be missing parts, so if you get this item and are missing pedals let me know and I've got you covered.

We got this one for our granddaughter's fifth birthday and it was a hit. It was super easy to assemble and the design and sturdiness of the bike was excellent. Schwinn has always been a good name for bikes so I felt this was a good choice for her first two wheeler. She had an easy time riding and loved it. In fact, it was such a hit that we bought a second one for her sister who will be turning 3 this month. She's tall for her age and loved riding her sister's bike. She chose a different color and is really happy with it. Only downside is the lack of a kick stand which we will need once the training wheels come off. It would be nice to have a matching stand rather than the chrome color that can be purchased separately. The basket is also a bit flimsy and could break after several falls once the training wheels come off and the bike hits the ground. These are all minor inconveniences as the overall quality of the bike seems really good. It's only our first month so we'll have to see how the two bikes hold up after this summer.

Bought this as a first bike for my 6yo. He’s 3ft 11inches tall and the 18 inch fits him perfectly, with a little room to grow. The bike is black and sleek. Tires work well. We had to add more air into them prior to riding it. Training wheels were super easy to install and take off when my 6yo was done with them. He learned to ride two wheels on this bike. It rides smooth. It’s a bit heavy. Even for me to lift on the bike rack but I manage. My kiddo can pick it up when it falls on the ground. Just not the lightest bike.

Docking a half star because assembly went along great until the very end when we had to make sure the brakes worked. The instructions were poor for troubleshooting the brakes and a screw was stripped prior to us assembling it. It did take two adults to assemble in less than an hour, plus we took it to a local bike shop to have the brakes checked. It was a minor annoyance; still recommend this bike.

Reading some of these reviews had me a bit concerned. I believe that many are written by individuals expecting the bike to arrive ready to ride. This is not the case.

You should avoid making this purchase if you are not mechanically inclined. With that said, assembly is not difficult. This will include adjusting the hand brakes. These are the items usually already done for you when purchasing from a bike shop.

A lot of reviews mention issues with the crank bearings failing. I believe this is caused either by they way the bike is shipped or by kids dropping the bike on its side too frequently after removing the training wheels. That is because the crank housing is plastic. It’s the only thing that is lacking of typical Schwinn quality. When the bike arrived at my house, it was clearly marked not to place the package on its side. The delivery person did so anyway.

Before I even pulled it out of the box, I checked to make sure it was not damaged and that there were no missing parts. Good to go!

This is a very nice kid’s bike and my son loves it. The bike is fairly lite for having a steel frame. If your kids requires an 18 inch model or smaller, I would recommend it. If you are looking for a 20 inch model, I would consider another model or brand, especially if your kid is an aggressive rider.

    Good luck!

The bike is a gift for my granddaughter, and she LOVES it!!! I am pretty handy with tools, but having said that, be aware that the box it arrived in clearly states that it should be assembled by a professional, and the instructions were not specifically for the bike I bought.. so you have to figure out what type of seat , wheels and most importantly brakes you have. And you will need a tire pressure gauge and bike pump, because the tires have to be inflated to a specific PSI. Also, if you read the AI generated information about ease of assembly, know that there are NO TOOLS included as it says.. the box does not state that tools are included.. so I’m not sure where that information came from. Aside from that, it’s a very sturdy bike, the seat height is adjustable so as your child grows taller, the bike can grow with them. Stability with the training wheels in place is really good. I would definitely recommend this bike.. but if you are not mechanically inclined, be prepared to have someone else put it together.

Bought this one for my 5 years old daughter. She was looking forward to the bike for weeks. Unfortunately she tried riding on this bike once and gave up on it. It felt rough and gave pain to her butt. After just 1 test ride, its now sitting in my storage waiting to be disposed of. Better off testing before buying any bike people, unless u are really sure about you want to buy. Decathlon in Singapore is worth trying out if you want to buy simple bikes.

There are no training wheels (the description is completely deceptive), I can't install the reflector because its base which is attached to the bike is missing, there is no installation section in the manual. Unless the company sends the missing pieces and wheels, I will keep this score. The box in which the bike comes is very fragile and with a lot of holes. It would be a reasonable birthday gift. Please look for something else!
