- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024I really enjoyed The Close & this one is even better..I like he writing style & the character development ...& of course Maeve & Josh..The twists & turns in the mystery are well thought out. Everything ties together well but it leaves you guessing until the end..which by the way ends in a cliff hanger...Naturally I can't wait for the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024The mystery is 10 stars! The book is just wonderful. I want to whine about Maeve. Move on if you don't want spoilers about her relationship with Josh.
He's washed brains out of her hair, cried when he thought he was the reason she got attacked, rescued her time and time again. He's so stupid in love with her and she is "trying to get to the bottom" of his feelings for her? Honestly, there's drawing out and then there's just fed-upness.
The thing about reading a series is that you become very invested in the characters. And you want to see some growth. Georgia has grown. Josh has grown. Maeve seems wibblier in her own mind. It's like every encounter with Josh is the first time. Why is she just so vague? By Book 11, come on! The minute he looked into her eyes during the dance at that wedding, it was game over. Now it just feels like the obstacles are contrived. I'm a bit disappointed that they have not progressed into a beautiful and/or hot love scene that blows my mind. They deserve it. And it won't make me want to read Casey any less if they became a couple. I'd only want more. I love her stories, her writing. She's one of the best and I'm so grateful that I found her.
But, come on!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024The Maeve Kerrigan series keeps getting better! If you are new to this series, it is well worth your time starting from the beginning as there are so many little call backs to earlier novels through out the series that make it a joy to read. At the heart of this current mystery is a family drama that is captivating. BUT, it is the continued growth of the two lead characters, Maeve and Josh, that make this series so great! And yes, the ending is something....but it is good!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2024I’ve enjoyed the Maeve Kerrigan series up to now but I didn’t enjoy this installment. At over 400 pages, it’s just too long for the plot. So much rushing around with more about the relationship between Maeve and her boss Derwent than the actual mystery—the murder of an elderly couple in London that might or might not have something to do with the disappearance of their adopted daughter fifteen years earlier. Reading it was like being jolted along in an unreliable vehicle: just when you think things are getting going, the plot sputters and when it picks up again, it’s onto Maeve and Derwent again. I soldiered on to see how she would pull the mess together. She pulls something together but it’s by no means done to my satisfaction in terms of the mysteries I’ve read. Just doesn’t rank up there at all and I didn’t feel satisfied at the end that I understood why the story had merited all those pages.
And then Casey commits what I consider the unforgivable sin of ending the book on a cliffhanger. Not that part of me really cares at this point. I think I might read the reviews of her next Maeve Kerrigan to see how the series carries on but I think I am done with buying the books and reading them cover to cover.
I gave it three stars though because at least it’s written well. So many books nowadays show poor editing. This one is grammatically correct, timelines are okay. It’s just that one of the main events still doesn’t make sense at the end. But maybe that’s her point, that human beings don’t make sense? Whatever, I didn’t close the book feeling that the several hours I’d spent reading had ultimately been worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024I have just finished this latest installment of " Maeve and Derwent" And I am speechless (In an ultimately positive way ) But boy, what an intense Ride this book was.
The mystery, as always, was impeccable and the characters rich and real and flawed and heroic.
Without giving anything away, the continued growth of Maeve and Josh's relationship left me Feeling a Gordian knot of emotion.
Not quite sure I'll be ready for the next installment after reading the epilogue however ~
I will need time to let this powerful story digest.
Thank you so much, Ms Casey for your exceptional Work , and the characters that are some of my all time favorites.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024I've followed the Maeve Kerrigan series for several years, but I must have missed the previous one, which left me at a bit of a loss on a current situation.
When Bruce and Helena Marshall are found dead in their beds in what looks like a murder/suicide, DS
Maeve Kerrigan questions the scene. The scene has been staged, and both Bruce and Helena have been murdered.
Sixteen years earlier, their adopted daughter disappeared and tore the family apart. Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent can't help but wonder if the murder has anything to do with the missing (presumed dead) Rosalie. The "perfect" family was not perfect even before Rosalie's disappearance and details not previously available make that clear.
As usual, the plot and plot development is right on target; however, having missed the previous book, both Maeve and Josh feel...different. I must go back and pick up The Close.
Jane Casey is one of my favorite writers, and I'm looking forward to book 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series keeps getting better and better!
I’m a big, big fan of Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series. Whenever Jane Casey has a new book out, it goes straight to the top of my TBR pile. In the last book it seemed that things may have been moving for Josh Derwant and Maeve Kerrigan in a way I previously, never thought possible, after they had to pretend to be a young couple moving to a new area, while working undercover. They’ve always been good friends, but I never thought there was a chance of their friendship developing into something more. In the latest book, A Stranger in the Family, Jane Casey takes a deep dive into their relationship. It’s clear to see how much this has developed over the course of this series, and Maeve’s feelings for Josh come through strongly, but Josh doesn’t quite respond to her feelings in the same way. It’s what makes this series so much more than a standard police procedural.
Of course, there is an intriguing case for Maeve and Josh to sink their teeth into. The mother and father of a girl who went missing sixteen years ago have been found dead in what looks like a murder-suicide. Their little girl, Rosalie was never found, and the mystery of her disappearance has never been solved. The discovery of the bodies gives Maeve the push to take a look again at Rosalie’s disappearance, and soon she uncovers that things are not as they first seem. There are some very dark revelations as the truth about what happened comes to light.
I was fascinated by the disappearance of Rosalie, especially as we begin to understand what happened leading up to Rosalie going missing. In the chapters when Jane Casey takes us back to before the disappearance, I really felt for her. I wanted Maeve and Josh to find out what happened to Rosalie, and I was kept hooked right the way through.
Jane Casey is a writer who knows how to delve into human emotion and this is done brilliantly with Maeve and Josh in this book. Their story here gripped me, perhaps even more than the investigation into what happened to Rosalie and her parents. They are both the reason why I keep coming back to this series and I will continue to do so. Now, after reading that ending, I’m desperate to get my hands on the next book in the series and I hope we’re not going to have to wait too long.
Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series keeps getting better and better, her writing is so addictive and her characters are so compelling. I’m certain this book is going to be in my top ten reads of the year. I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maeve & Josh reach an understanding
It’s a police procedural with a great cast of characters. As well as the crimes to be solved there is great sexual tension between Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent which is not satisfied due to one major obstacle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I absolutely love the Maeve Kerrigan series and had been really looking forward to the next instalment, but it turned out to be a disappointing read. The case that Maeve and her colleagues are called upon to solve is fairly interesting but other elements that make Jane Casey's books so rewarding to read were absent here. I missed the depth of characterisation of the earlier books: both Maeve and Josh were rather wooden and two-dimensional. I also missed the interactions of the previous books, featuring Maeve's mother, for example. This time round the interactions that Maeve has with her female colleagues are a bit contrived and serve simply to keep the plot going (or rather, stop the development of the major plot line). Without providing spoilers, I can only say that the ending to the book is absolutely ridiculous and seems designed only to get readers to buy the next book in the series. I'm not sure I'm going to bother: I feel very let down by a book where the author seems, literally, to have lost the plot.
