DL-280 Ultrasonic Cleaner
My only previous experience with an Ultrasonic water bath was in college with a lab scale version to clean microscope slides. So, I was really surprised to see home units available for really affordable prices.
Initial reactions - Exterior is black plastic, interior is a steel tank where water is added. Sleek and seems solidly built.
Setup - There is almost no setup. It’s the unit, a lid, and a plug for the outlet.
Usage - Fill with water and click the front button. The unit emits a soft vibrating sound as the ultrasound is being applied. After 5 minutes, the unit stops by itself.
Customization - Because of its simplicity, there’s really not much you can set. There are no time or temperature settings. You can clean at 5 minute intervals. The water heats up slightly during the ultrasound process (cool water turns to warm water). The instructions say you can add a small amount of detergent to the water bath (I’m assuming dish soap).
I tried two tests. One was my nighttime dental guard that I’ve worn for years and brush in the morning when I take it out and at night before I use it. Didn’t notice a big difference in my night guard, but you could see some particulates in the water. The white surface of my night guard was just small scratches made over time, and there was no getting rid of that.
The other thing I tried was the little brush on my Sonicare. It fit perfectly in the tub. Again, some particulates in the water. The brush did look visibly cleaner.
Other notes - the manual says that dentures, rings, earring, folding eyeglasses, waterproof watches, shaver heads, comb, toothbrush, pen heads, small metal parts, and coins can be cleaned in this machine. I can’t imagine that most eyeglasses, combs, or toothbrushes can fit this machine, but the others seem like reasonable applications.
All in all, it’s small (wouldn’t mind it sitting on the countertop), easy to use, and it works. The issue with the small size though, is it’s a bit limited in application. For whatever you’re planning on cleaning in this, make sure it fits first! The metal tank is 87 mm in diameter and the max water level mark is about 29 mm in height (38 mm is the height of the tank, but the instructions say not to exceed the max water level).
