Will Control a Greenhouse Heater

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024Style: TC818Verified PurchaseI recently finished putting a greenhouse together to help our plants better weather the coming winter. Even so we do have freezes in south Texas so additional protection is needed. I have a 1500 Watt space heater but its thermostat is inadequate for the job. I could have used the TC816 but for 3 bux more I get many more control options with the TC818. Functionally it rates 5 stars, but there are some detractors. The instructions are overly complex and can be confusing while the actual use and setup are quite straight forward. The wires from the controller to the temperature sensor are stiff with thin insulation and no way to replace the sensor if it breaks. The package includes a small plastic cylinder - the purpose of which was unclear (until seeing the very last line of the instructions listing this as the 'reset tool'). Unlike the listing this item will Not control 3680 Watts in the US (1800 Watts per the manual), only in Europe with 230 Volt power.
Bottom line - This is the best available for the job, I would buy it again and I do recommend it, but it could easily be better.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024The heating and cooling modes are intuitive and correctly turn on and off at the right temperatures. The plug is relatively small for these types of devices. I appreciate that this is 16-amp, because a lot of these thermostats are much lower amps. If you run anything substantial like a standard electric space heater, you're looking at a minimum of 13 amps, and 1500 watts.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025Style: TC819Verified PurchaseSummary: may suddenly fail in the ON position (sending power) after working correctly (on and off) for a period of time. Do not use in any critical situation. Look for a more reliable product.
I've used this for about a month now. Setup, despite the bad instructions, was fairly easy given that there were only a few buttons to try. I set it to come on at 70 degrees and turn off at 71 degrees (i.e., heating mode as we're in the winter), and plugged my heater in. Of course the heater itself should be set to full blast, so that this device turns it on and off.
The last couple of days, I've woken up and noticed it extremely warm in the room. After the first day, I moved the sensor about a foot higher which in my experience will cause the room to be a bit cooler than if the sensor was placed low to the ground. This morning again it was very hot, so I looked at this device which showed the current temp of 83.5 degrees! Which I now know is what my room gets to with the heater running unmetered/full blast all night. And the heater was still receiving power (the heater on full blast of course) as I was looking at it when clearly it should haven't been receiving power. I pressed some of the buttons on this device, cycling through a few of them, and somehow the device stopped sending power to the heater, allowing the room temp to come down.
Obviously this thing is prone to failure. Whatever checks that it does to know that it should stop sending power to the heater past 71 degrees, was NOT working to actually cut the circuit off. Slightly more disturbing is that it worked fine for the first 4 weeks, cycling the heater on and off appropriately. So you can have a false sense that it's working and might assume that it will continue to work. A smart design would have a warning feature whereby if the sensor temp is greater than the setting temp, AND the circuit is still open, do some kind of alarm (a light beep would be good). But that might be admitting that they realize their system to turn off the circuit may not actually work -- and that's very bad since that is ALL this thing is supposed to do.
Luckily in my case, I only had to put up with a couple of very hot nights (so far). Now that I've pressed the buttons and seemingly have it working again, I have no idea how long it will function properly before it sticks again. As a backup, I've turned my heater down a bit from full blast, so at least if this device fails again, it might not get quite so hot.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025Style: TC819Verified PurchaseI've had the unit for about a week now and the temperature control has been good. The temp indicated on its panel matches within .2 degrees Fahrenheit the temp I read from a digital thermometer positioned within 3 inches of this unit's sensor. Two things to be aware of: 1.) the unit's control screen is visible only if you are looking at the screen head-on. Trying so see the screen from any oblique angle is not possible. 2.) The unit is large enough so that it may block access to adjacent power plugs === for example plugs on a power strip. These two items are only minor irritants, but they are why I gave only four stars rather than five.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2025Style: TC819Verified PurchaseIt reads in Celsius could not find a way to make it read in Fahrenheit. Once I figured that out it works as expected
