The docking station worked perfectly! I needed to clone a HDD and this was a million times better than trying with software on a PC. To clone a drive, all you have to do is click a button a couple times and wait (the bigger the drive the longer the wait). It made a perfect clone.
Like it says, this was not brand new when I got it. It was likley just used to copy a drive and returned. It wasn't in terrible shape, but it was obvious. The power cord looked like it was wrapped up by a 5 year old and both bay doors had scrapes on them from where HDDs were inserted and pushed them down. It won't let me upload pics for this for some reason, I reduced their size considerably, and even restarted the browser, but no luck. It just let me upload a video for another product review, though...?
Anyway, that said, it works fine as a hard drive docking bay. Transfer speed seems normal too. I haven't tried using it to clone a drive, but I never really have the need these days.
This docking bay arrived fast and its stupid simple to use. I had some old hard drives that I needed to verify the contents of before destroying them and this was the answer. just plugged it in to a USB 3 port and pop in a drive and give it a few seconds to spin up for access.
I HAVE WORKED WITH HARD DRIVES AND SOCKETS, ALWAYS WHEN THE UNIT IS INSERTED THERE IS RESISTANCE AS THE CONTACTS ARE INSERTED. THIS SOCKET HAS NO RESISTANCE AND I THOUGHT I MUST HAVE ORDERED THE WRONG HARD DRIVE. I CHECKED THE SOCKET AND LOOKED OK. WHEN I PUT THE UNIT ON LINE THE COMPUTER RECOGNIZED THE DRIVE. I MOVED THE HUB A LITTLE AND IT LOST THE CONNECTION DURING THE FORMAT IT FAILED. ON THE SECOND FORMAT I DID NOT TOUCH IT AND THE FORMAT COMPLETED. I STARTED COPING FILES AND IT STARTED OK. THE HUB WAS MOVED AND THE CONNECTION WAS AGAIN LOST. I PUT THRE POPSICLE STICKS AGAST THE DRIVE TO KEEP IT FROM FLOPPING AND THIS HELD THE DRIVE FIRMLY AND A NEW COPY WAS STARTED. WITH THE POP CYCLE STICKS HOLDING THE DRIVE SOLID IT IS WORKING. I HAVE NOT DECIDED WHETHER OR NOT TO RETURN THE HUB. IT IS DEFINITELY CRAPY DESIGN!
Bought this back in March and used it, worked great! Powered it up for second time use and after a few minutes, it went completely dead. No power at all. Unplugged and reseated USB and power cable, nothing. Dead as a doorknob.
I had some old hard drives from my old computers that still had photos on them that I wanted. This was a quick and easy solution for accessing them and copying them to the new computer so they could be backed up properly. The USB 3.0 provides for quick access. I'm very happy how easy it is to plug in the drive and access the old drive.
